Incubation Center

Injecting New Vitality into Taiwan’s Industries

Technological innovation is one of the most important drivers of national economic growth. To develop the emerging technology industry, ITRI established its Open Lab and Business Incubation Center in 1994, transforming ITRI from a library of knowledge into a treasure house without walls. By bringing together industries and technological research and development, this approach provided an environment that nurtures high-tech businesses.

In 1996, ITRI established Taiwan’s first-ever Business Incubation Center, and in the following year, it became a member of the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) in the US. The goal was to develop Taiwan into the world’s leading technology innovation incubation base. In 2006, ITRI received the Best Incubation Center of the Year award from NBIA, becoming the first Asian institution to win such an award in NBIA’s 20-year history. The Business Incubation and Open Lab transformed into the TVC technology innovation accelerator in 2013, and in 2020, ITRI won the Business Incubation Award at the 17th National Innovation Award. These initiatives helped ITRI foster a supportive environment for technological research and development and encourage the growth of high-tech businesses.

ITRI has established multiple high-tech startup incubation bases across Taiwan, including the NanKang IC Design Incubation Center, Central Taiwan Innovation Campus, Southern Taiwan Innovation & Research Park, Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site, and Hsinchu Business Incubation Center-Kuang-Fu Campus. These facilities have provided training and support for thousands of companies in a variety of technical fields, including information and communications, materials and chemicals, biomedical technology and medical materials, electronics and optoelectronics, machinery and systems, and green energy and sustainability.
