Major Milestones
Supporting the Mobile Communication Industry’s Evolution From 2G to 5G
Since the MOTC Directorate General of Telecommunications allowed the private sector to operate mobile communication businesses in 1997, cell phones have gradually become a part of our daily lives. Yet ITRI has had already working on mobile communication technologies in 1992. From the CDMA spread spectrum wireless phone technology to 2G to 5G, ITRI has played an active role in the development process.
In 2001, ITRI unveiled the radio frequency IC for GSM dual-band transceivers, securing key technology for the 2G mobile communication industry. Taiwanese manufacturers began to produce cell phones, with the communication industry maintaining nearly 20% of output value growth for five consecutive years. In 2004, ITRI developed WCDMA Common IP core technologies and the 3G chip, boosting Taiwan’s cell phone chip and system industries from 2G/2.5G to the more challenging 3G sector. In 2008, ITRI began to work on 4G WiMAX mobile communication chips and successfully developed the first IEEE 802.16e MIMO (multiple input multiple output) baseband SoC as well as the world’s first Watt-level linear CMOS power amplifier (PA). This breakthrough gave the industries a comprehensive 4G WiMAX mobile communication solution. In 2019, ITRI launched the first wave of 5G small cell products simultaneously with the rest of the world. The move established Taiwan’s 5G base station network and helped manufacturers seize early business opportunities in the white-box network equipment market. In 2020, ITRI presented the first Taiwan-made 5G O-RAN standalone small cell and transferred the technology to numerous server and netcom businesses. The businesses have successfully established connections with three major private network equipment suppliers in Japan.
ITRI started to work on mobile number portability (MNP) services in 2005 to reduce restrictions in the telecom business and users’ needs of changing their phone numbers when they switch providers. It is also an eco-friendly move since the employees do not have to print out the process documents again, saving the company printing and energy costs. Businesses from Singapore and Malaysia have traveled to Taiwan, the first country in Asia to offer MNP services, to learn from our experiences.
