Major Milestones
Taking Part In UN’s Environmental Conventions
Taiwan’s unique diplomatic situation constantly excludes it from international organizations and official attendance in UN organizations. However, global environmental issues such as ozone depletion and climate change have gained increased attention since the 1980s. Without participation in international environmental conventions and agreements proposed by the UN, Taiwan’s international trade would be severely affected, hindering entry into the global supply chain for local industries.
Fortunately, with the assistance of former UNEP Executive Director Dr. Mostafa Tolba during the 1990s, Taiwan was able to take part in the Conferences of the Parties (COP) of the UNFCCC and the Montreal Protocol as an NGO observer, with ITRI representing the country. Taiwan strives to demonstrate its dedication towards global environmental issues through different actions, and aims to raise international awareness of Taiwan’s identity and contributions. By following the latest global trends concerning carbon reduction and control, Taiwan can adjust regulations accordingly and continuously revise climate governance and related policies to show dedication and contribution to international environmental conventions.
